UBM project wins prestigious MIPIM Award

Granary Island in Danzig recognised as “Best Urban Project“

Vienna, 17 September 2020 – The Granary Island project in Poland has received one of the prestigious MIPIM Awards. A major contribution to this urban developmente project realised by Immobel was provided by UBM Development AG, which was responsible for development of the Holiday Inn City Centre Gdansk Hotel. The hotel, which was built on historic Granary Island, is characterised by unmistakable architecture at the most prominent site of this former storage location.

“With our hotel, we were privilieged to set the set the solitaire in the crown of Danzig’s Granary Island and are therefore especially pleased over the distinguished MIPIM Award for the best urban development project“, commented Thomas G. Winkler, CEO of UBM Development AG. The Holiday Inn Gdansk City Centre was opened at a spectacular ceremony in June 2019 after a construction period of only two years. This 240-room hotel was sold to Union Investment Real Estate through a forward deal one and a half years before completion.

The coveted MIPIM Awards are presented each year at the MIPIM real estate event in Cannes, where outstanding projects are recognised in 12 categories. Due to the corona-related cancellation of the event during the spring, the awards were presented at the Intercontinental Paris Le Grand on 15 September.

The jury emphasised the following special features of the Granary Island project: It promotes social integration and makes a contribution towards economic growth. The city of tomorrow – where people represent the centre of attention – has been reinvented.

The location of this hotel, which was developed by UBM, has the potential to become an architectonic highlight in Danzig. The hotel consists of three parts: the reconstructed grain storage facility and two modern, seven-storey buildings that are connected by a glass passageway. This combination of contemporary with history has created a unique location which will make an important contribution to the revival of this urban quarter.

In addition to the hotel developed by UBM, this urban development project includes apartments, shops and offices. This mixed use quarter also makes excellent use of its waterfront location with a new yacht harbour that gives the area a dynamic touch. A pedestrian bridge links the old city and the historic Granary Island.
